Presentation of the institute

A word from the director

“ICMUB is at the heart of the development and promotion of Chemical Sciences in the broadest sense, in its research and education mission. Chemical Sciences occupy a central and fundamental place in contemporary Industry and Technology, in fields that cover the whole range of societal issues linked to food, health and well-being, safety, environment, housing, energy, mobility, digital, leisure and culture. Chemical Sciences express themselves in terms of the creation/design/construction of functional objects: molecules, supramolecules, biomolecules, nano-objects, materials. They are present right from the start of processes, they remain essential, open and allied to associated disciplines such as mechanics, electronics, computing, physics, biology, medicine, materials science and nanotechnologies. The Institut de Chimie Moléculaire de l’Université de Bourgogne (ICMUB), a CNRS-UBE joint research unit, is the only one mainly attached to the CNRS’s Institut National de Chimie, with a total of over 170 researchers, academic staff, research and training support staff, PhD students, post-docs and associate researchers. ICMUB’s activities of excellence extend nationally and internationally, and are structured around two cross-disciplinary research areas (Environment and Health), with metal chemistry, coordination chemistry and organometallic chemistry as the common thread. The unit boasts several top-level technological platforms (PACSMUB) and high-performance tools for valorisation, and plays a leading regional role in fundamental and applied training in molecular chemistry and analytical chemistry for students at all levels. It’s a role we’ll retain and strengthen through highly transdisciplinary and cooperative research, as demonstrated by our many programs, which I encourage you to discover as you explore our current website. ”

Who we are

ICMUB was created in 2007 following the merger of two UMRs: the Laboratoire de Synthèse et d’Electrosynthèse Organométallique (LSEO, UMR 5188 UB/CNRS) and the Laboratoire d’Ingénierie Moléculaire pour la Séparation et les Applications des Gaz (LIMSAG, UMR 5633 UB/CNRS/Air Liquide). It is located in the Mirande building of the University of Burgundy Europe, on a total surface area of around 3,700 m2. The entire unit is classified as a Zone à Régime Restrictif (ZRR).

Since 2024, the unit has been structured into two departments, one dedicated to environment, materials and energy (SEM), the other to health and medical imaging (ISI). These two departments, comprising two teams (CaPCoM and EMCAP) and three teams (SMol, RITM and IFTIM), are interconnected through common themes. These two research departments are supported by major research support services (administration, IT, technical platforms, etc.).
