BFC 2022 – GS – PRODHYG: Production of hydrogen by surface metal catalysis: A theoretical and experimental cross-approach

Funding (ICMUB): 110 000 €

Duration: Octob. 2022 – 36 months

Scientific leader: Jean-Cyrille HIERSO (coordinator)

Summary

The production, storage and conversion of H2 are major challenges for high-tech industrial companies. In the ProdHyg program, we aim to achieve the controlled destocking of carbon-free H2 by catalysis from its secure chemical storage, in solid form, in a way that respects people and the environment. H2 would be stored on the one hand from solid sources with a high content of H2 atoms (amine, boranes, silanes, etc.), and on the other hand produced by photolysis of water via ferroelectric materials. The multidisciplinary chemistry, physics and engineering of the nanomaterials of the project results in the use of reactive surfaces that will be analysed theoretically and experimentally. Our project is part of the initiation of an ambitious multi-year program bringing together partners from the Occitanie region, Germany (Univ. Justus Liebig Giessen) and Canada (Montreal, IRN Matériaux Contrôlés). We plan to train international Master’s students, PhD students (in Theoretical Chemistry and Metal Catalysis), and post-doctoral fellows. In this context, we propose to study the contribution for the production of H2 of ferroelectricity in oxide heterojunctions, and innovative and safe synthesis modes of catalytic destocking of H2 by complexes or nanocomposites with active surface. We will benefit from a large instrument recently acquired at UBE allowing the analysis of surface and non-destructive interface at depth by hard X-ray photoemission inspired by synchrotrons (HAXPES).
